*bōþlą

Runic: ᛒᛟᚦᛚᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈbɔːθ.lɑ̃/

noun · neuter · a-stem

Meanings

house, dwelling

Etymology

Possibly from *būwijaną (‘to settle, inhabit’) + *-þlą (forms nouns denoting a tool or instrument) (Orel 2003), or perhaps from *bōþō (‘building, dwelling’) + *-(i)lą (forms nouns of diminutive connotation) (Philippa et al. 2003). Both of these ultimately derivations of Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH- (‘to be, grow’).
