*būsniz

Runic: ᛒᚢᛊᚾᛁᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈbuːs.niz/

noun · feminine · i-stem

Meanings

something offered

Etymology

From Early Proto-Germanic **budsniz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰ-, a zero-grade root from *bʰewdʰ- (‘to be awake, be aware’) + *-nis(forms abstract nouns from verbal roots and stems). Following root final dental consonants, an -s- is inserted before the suffix, creating the variant *-sniz. The long -ū- comes from compensatory lengthening after the loss of the -d. Related to *beudaną (‘to offer, bid’), *beudaz (‘that upon which something is offered; table’), *budą (‘offer, message’).
