*anabūsniz
Runic: ᚨᚾᚨᛒᚢᛊᚾᛁᛉ Pronunciation: /ˌɑ.nɑ.ˈbuːs.niz/noun · feminine · i-stem
Meanings
- commandment
- precept; instruction, injunction
Etymology
From *ana- + *būsniz, a deverbal noun derived from *anabeudaną. The compound is attested in Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌱𐌿𐍃𐌽𐍃 (anabusns), where it translates Ancient Greek ἐντολή (entolḗ) in the Gothic Bible. Semantically, the compound represents a development from ‘something put forward/offered’ to ‘something imposed or prescribed’, hence ‘commandment’ (Lehmann 1986a: 31). In Old Saxon, the forms ambūsan, anbūsan are attested in the Heliand (Holthausen 1967: 2).
