verb · Weak class 2

to hold; seize

Etymology

An iterative from Proto-Indo-European *pod-néh2-ti, ~ *pod-n̥h2-énti from a poorly attested root *ped- / *pod- (‘to go after, fetch, carry’). Possibly related to *fatą (‘vessel, container’) from a similar root (Lehmann 1986a). For o-grade in the iterative, see (Kroonen 2012b).
