Etymology

From pre-Germanic *plow-yó-m, from an o-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *plew- (‘to sail, flow’). A direct cognate with Ancient Greek πλοῖον (ploîon) (ploîon, ‘a floating vessel, ship, boat’) and Latin pluvius (‘inner court of a dwelling, open to the sky and capable of collecting rainwater’). Related to *flaumaz (‘stream, current, flow’) and *fleutaną (‘to float, to stream’).
