Disputed. Either from Proto-Indo-European *kew-, *ḱew- (‘skin, cuticle, hide; beauty, splendour’) or from Proto-Indo-European *ḱyeh₁- (‘grey, dark shade’), or a merger of the two. Compare Sanskrit छवि (chavi) (chavi, ‘skin, beauty’).
