*hwētaną

Runic: ᚺᚹᛖᛏᚨᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈxʷɛː.tɑ.nɑ̃/

verb · Strong class 7d

Meanings

  1. to attack, assault
  2. to stab, pierce

Etymology

Apparently from a Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₁d- (‘to stab; pointy, sharp’), albeit without any secure cognates outside of Germanic. Earlier identifications of the root with Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewd- (‘to propel’) are untenable morphologically.
