Etymology
Uncertain; possibly from *inguz, *unguz (‘mortal; man’), from Proto-Indo-European *n̥ḱús (‘dead, mortal’), from *neḱ- (‘to die, perish’) + *-us. Thought to be the human incarnation of Nerthus, and the original name of the Norse fertility god Freyr.
