Uncertain. Has been taken as a derivative from *nabō (‘nave’), with sense development "nave" > "protuberance, knob" > "nose, beak", as well as to Gaulish nebba (‘bill’). Compare also Proto-Germanic *snabulaz (‘snout’), Lithuanian snãpas (‘snout’).
