Probably from Pre-Germanic *streydʰh₁-, a compound of a Proto-Indo-European *strey- (‘to resist’) + *dʰeh₁- (‘to put’). Probably related to Latvian strīdēties, striêtiês (‘to resist, quarrel’), Lithuanian strainùs (‘unruly’).
