Etymology

SS:reformulated from Wikt. Weak class 1. From *wīhaz (‘sacred, holy’) + *-āną. Reformulated in Northwest Germanic as a Weak class 1 verb, wīhijaną. The precise formation of the Germanic paradigm is uncertain, however, since the origin of the Weak class 3 alternation *-ai- ~ *-ā- remains disputed Jasanoff 1973; Ringe 2017: 203–206, 286–89; Tanaka 2011: 254–60, 268–69).
