*-ōniz
Runic: ᛟᚾᛁᛉ Pronunciation: /ɔː.niz/noun · feminine · i-stem
Function
forms feminine abstract or event nouns from weak class 2 verbs
Etymology
From the Weak class 2 stem-formant *-ō- (from Proto-Indo-European eh₂-stem noun suffix *-éh₂) + the Proto-Germanic abstract deverbal suffix *-niz, from PIE *-nis (Krahe & Meid 1969: 117–18). PGmc *-ni- had a wide range in abstract formation from weak verbs and appeared as *-ini-, *-aini-, or *-ōni- depending on the inflectional class of the base verb; Gothic preserved this type more extensively than the other daughter languages, which often replaced it with formations such as *-ungō/*-ingō (Kluge 1899: 74–76). Related to *-nizand *-īniz.
