*aferô

Runic: ᚨᚠᛖᚱᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.ɸe.rɔːː/

noun · masculine · an-stem

Meanings

offspring, descendant; by extension, a successor, literally ‘one who comes after’

Etymology

A substantivized masculine an-stem built to the same stem as *aferą, hence literally ‘the later/following one’ (Krahe & Meid 1969: 81). The base continues Proto-Indo-European *áp-ero-, a derivative of *apó; compare Sanskrit अपर (ápara), Avestan 𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬀 (apara-), Lycian epre/i-, Lydian afara/i-, and Sanskrit अपत्यम् (apatyám) (Dunkel 2014: 69; Kroonen 2013: 2; Mallory & Adams 1997: 42).
