Etymology

Traditionally from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓw, more fully analyzed as a laryngeal preform such as *h₃eḱt-eh₃u, perhaps an old dual formation meaning ‘two fours’, though this internal analysis remains uncertain (Kroonen 2013: 6). Blažek (1998) suggests *h₂oḱtoh₁(w), characterizing it as dual form of o-stem *h₂oḱto-, ultimately from root *h₂eḱ-, meaning ‘a set of points (of one hand)‘ = ‘fingers (without thumb)’. Cognates are Latin octō, Ancient Greek ὀκτώ (oktṓ), Old Irish ocht, Welsh wyth, Sanskrit अष्टौ (aṣṭáu), Lithuanian aštuonì, and Latvian astoņi (Meier-Brügger 2003: 234; Watkins 2011: s.v. oktō(u)).
