*aljar
Runic: ᚨᛚᛃᚨᚱ Pronunciation: /ˈɑl.jɑr/adverb
Meanings
elsewhere; in another place
Etymology
From the pronominal stem *alja- of *aljaz + *-r, an inherited locative element forming static place adverbs (‘where?’) from pronominal stems; compare *hē₂r, *hwar, and *þar (Fulk 2018: 237). Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌾𐌰𐍂 (aljar) 𐌰𐌻𐌾𐌰𐍂 (aljar, ‘elsewhere’) and the West Germanic reflexes confirm the Proto-Germanic formation (Lehmann 1986a: 28).
