Etymology

From pre-Germanic *h₂enh₁-to-m, a neuter deverbal *-tó- formation from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁- (Rix et al. 2001: 267–268; Wodtko et al. 2008: 307–10). The simplex is chiefly evidenced by *uzanþą > Proto-West Germanic *uʀanþ > Old English oroþ and the derivative *anþijaną (Seebold 1970: 78–79). The root is also reflected in Sanskrit अनिति (ániti), Ancient Greek ἄνεμος (ánemos), Latin anima, and Proto-Celtic *anatlā (Matasović 2009a: 35; Rix et al. 2001: 267–268).
