Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éu-tu-s, belonging to the Indo-European *h₂eu(H)- word family associated with favor, assistance, well-being, enjoyment, and desire. Compare Sanskrit अवति (avati), Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (auuaiti), Old Irish con·oí, Ancient Greek ἐνηής (ēnēḗs), and Latin aveō (Kroonen 2013: 43; Visser 2024: 250–65). Kroonen reconstructs the immediate preform specifically as *h₂eu-tu-; García Ramón (2012) and Villanueva Svensson (2014: 256–57) argue that the traditionally separated PIE roots *h₂eu- and *h₁euH- instead belong to a single root *h₂euh₁-, with semantic developments including ‘help, favor’, ‘be pleased with, prefer’, and ‘desire’. The precise morphological relationship of *h₂eu-tu- to this laryngeal-final root is uncertain. The adjective should probably be distinguished from *auþijaz, although Orel (2003: 30, s.v. *auþjaz) suggests that the two may nevertheless be historically related; Lehmann (1986a: 52, s.v. *auþs) treats them as identical.
