*awjō
Runic: ᚨᚹᛃᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑu̯.jɔː/noun · feminine · ō-stem
Meanings
- wetland; floodplain, meadow
- island
Etymology
From pre-Germanic *ahwjā́, a jō-stem derivative of *ahwō; Ringe (2017: 130) reconstructs the development *ahʷjā́ > *agʷjā́ > Proto-Germanic *aujō (here *awjō), while Kroonen (2013: 41–42) projects the formation as *h₂ekʷ-iéh₂. Ultimately associated with *h₂ékʷeh₂, also underlying Latin aqua (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. aha¹). The deeper origin of this restricted Germanic–Italic word is disputed: Beekes (1998: 459–61) considers it an Old European substrate word, whereas Kroonen tentatively connects it with PIE *h₂ep- (Kroonen 2013: 7, s.v. *ahwō-). See *ahwō for further discussion.
