*tūmōną

Runic: ᛏᚢᛗᛟᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈtuː.mɔː.nɑ̃/

verb · Weak class 2

Meanings

to rotate; spin; revolve

Etymology

Unknown. Orel considers the word of onomatopoeic origin, similar to Romanian tumbă (‘somersault’) and its Romance cognates. Etymologiebank, apparently citing LIV 149, says that it is possibly related to Sanskrit धावति (dhāvati) (dhāvati, ‘to flee, run’), Ancient Greek θύω (thúō) (thúō, ‘I rage, storm, rush in’), Latin furō (‘I rage’), suggesting a hypothetical Proto-Indo-European *dʰewH- (‘shake, roar’).
