*aidaz

Runic: ᚨᛁᛞᚨᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈɑi̯.ðɑz/

noun · masculine · a-stem

Meanings

fire; especially a funeral pyre or sacrificial/ritual fire

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éydʰ-o-s, an o-stem derivative of root *h₂eydʰ- (Kroonen 2013: 8; Rix et al. 2001: 259). The root itself has been analyzed as an old compound or enlarged verbal root *h₂ey-dʰh₁- (‘put to the fire’), from a putative *h₂ey- + dʰeh₁- (Thorsø et al. 2023: 108). Cognates include Old Irish áed, Latin aedēs, Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō), Sanskrit एध (édha), इद्ध (iddhá), and Avestan 𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬨𐬀 (aēsma) (Catt 2014; Mallory & Adams 1997: 87; Rix et al. 2001: 259).
