*ailą
Runic: ᚨᛁᛚᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑi̯.lɑ̃/noun · neuter · a-stem
Meanings
fire; a blaze or fire as a substance
Etymology
From pre-Germanic *aidlą, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂oydʰ-tló-m, an o-grade instrument/result noun from Proto-Indo-European root *h₂eydʰ- + *-tlo-m, the inherited instrument-noun suffix (Kroonen 2013: 11; Kroonen 2017: 106). The development *aidlą> *ailą involves dissimilatory loss of *d before *l; compare the closely related *aidaz, *ailijaną, and *ailidaz, the last derived through *ailijaną (Aikio 2020: 10–11). Cognates are Vedic Sanskrit इन्धे (indhé) and एध (édha), Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō) and αἶθος (aîthos), Old Irish áed, and Latin aedis/aedēs (Beekes 2010: 37; Mallory & Adams 1997: 87; Rix et al. 2001: 259).
