Meanings

fire, pyre

Etymology

Substantivized past participle of *ailijaną (with the weak participial formation *-idaz); thus originally ‘kindled, set alight’ > ‘a fire, pyre’ (Kroonen 2013: 11). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydh-. Cognates are Vedic Sanskrit इन्धे (indhé) and एध (édha), Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō) and αἶθος (aîthos), Old Irish áed, and Latin aedis/aedēs. (Beekes 2010: 37; Kroonen 2013: 11; Mallory & Adams 1997: 87; Rix et al. 2001: 259). Also related to *aidaz.
