From Proto-Indo-European *h₁óyno-ko-, an adjectival/intensive *-ko- derivative of *h₁óy-no-s. Cognate or closely parallel formations include Latin ūnicus and Old Church Slavonic инокъ (inokŭ) (Dunkel 2014: 589; Kroonen 2013: 11). Related to *ainaz and to the parallel adjective *ainagaz.
