*asnō
Runic: ᚨᛊᚾᛟ Pronunciation: /ˈɑs.nɔː/noun · feminine · ō-stem
Meanings
wage, payment; perhaps originally a harvest-share or remuneration for harvest work
Etymology
Related to *azaniz and the inherited Indo-European harvest season word represented by *h₁ós-r̥ ~ *h₁és-n-; compare Old Saxon asna (Kroonen 2013: 46, s.v. *azani-). The exact Proto-Indo-European formation is uncertain. Kroonen earlier reconstructed *aznō- from *h₂es-néh₂- (Kroonen 2011a: 48, 301), an analysis compatible with the later proposal of *h₂es- as the source of the harvest family (Neri 2016: 38). Compare Old Prussian assanis, Proto-Slavic esenь, and Ancient Greek ὀπώρα (opṓra) (Beekes 2010: 1094–95, s.v. ὀπώρα; Derksen 2008: 144, s.v. *̏esenь; Derksen 2015: 555–56, s.v. assanis). The semantic development was perhaps ‘harvest, harvest-work/share’ > ‘payment, wage’.
