*azaniz

Runic: ᚨᛉᚨᚾᛁᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.zɑ.niz/

noun · feminine · i-stem

Meanings

  1. summer, especially the late-summer harvest season
  2. harvest; harvest time

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁os-on-i-s, an *i-stem remodeling of the inherited static heteroclitic*h₁ós-r̥ ~ *h₁és-n- (Kroonen 2013: 46; Schaffner 2014: 75). Cognate with Old Prussian assanis, Proto-Slavic *esenь, and Ancient Greek ὀπώρα (opṓra), the latter preserving the strong *r-stem (Kroonen 2013: 46; Petit 2010b: 177; Schaffner 2014: 75). The ultimate origin of the heteroclitic noun is uncertain; proposals include a connection with *h₂es- (Neri 2016: 38; Schürr 2021: 270–272) and, less plausibly, with *h₁ésh₂r̥ (Pooth 2018: 1–14). Related to *asnō and *asnijaz.
