*azanōną

Runic: ᚨᛉᚨᚾᛟᚾᚨ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.zɑ.nɔː.nɑ̃/

verb · Weak class 2

Meanings

to harvest, reap

Etymology

A denominative of the Germanic harvest word represented by *azaniz, with *-ōną. Compare Old High German arnōn, directly attested as a Weak class 2 verb (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. arnôn). The absence of the medial vowel in arnōn points to a zero-grade Germanic stem *azn- beside *azani-, so an earlier reconstruction *aznōną next to analogically regularized *azanōną is also possible (Lloyd & Springer 1988: s.v. aran; Orel 2003: 31).
