From Proto-Germanic *aiganą + *-ǭ, forming an abstract/collective noun ‘ownership; owned things’ (Kroonen 2013: 8). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyḱ-. Compare the root to Sanskrit ईष्टे (īṣṭe), and Tocharian B aik- (Kroonen 2013: 8; Mallory & Adams 1997: 270; Watkins 2011: s.v. aik-). Also related to *aigô.
